Success for QUT Creative Writer

Date: 04 August 2009 - 04 November 2009

QUT Creative Writing graduate, Christine Bongers is finding real world success with the recent publication of her book, Dust.

Speaking of her motivation to write Dust, Christine reveals, "After my father's death, fear of failure seemed nothing compared to the cowardice implicit in a failure to even try. I began to write creatively, but without any clear intent; with only a vague sense of wanting to recreate a time and a place where my father was young and powerful and, of course, alive."

From pain comes beauty manifesting in the story of Cecilia, 'A smart, gutsy and loveable girl, with a delightful rebellious streak. Dust is amusing and light-hearted, yet steadily builds to a profoundly sad and disturbing crescendo', as quoted by Good Reading Magazine in the Young Readers review.

Head of QUT Creative Writing and Literary Studies, Sharyn Pearce says, "Christine was a member of our Youth Writing Masters cohort group in 2007, and Dust was peer-critiqued by members of that group. Her examiners' reports were glowing. We are enormously proud of her success. The book itself is a knockout."

Christine Bongers is a former radio and television journalist who began writing fiction in 2003. Her YA novel Dust, published by Random House Australia under their Woolshed Press Imprint, is now available.
